What's happening?

I've been a little busy getting all the CD's out, and writing some music for sync work, which is all good. And since my last post which seems like ages ago, I've bought and been given a hell of a lot of great music, so I'll share it with you lot.

Kalpataru Tree - All Things Passing

This I got given about a month ago, and has been on repeat quite often on my mp3 player while I'm out and about. It comes in the classification of psydub I guess, but I found it to be a lot more organic than a lot of psydub/psybient. The synth work is eased into the rounded basslines, and acoustic and electric guitar is played on most tracks, giving a real wholesome chilled out vibe. All the instruments are very chilled and relaxed, so nothing is competing for space and it just works in one mellow melting pot. Plus only $5, why not! http://kalpatarutree.bandcamp.com/

Stress Assassin - Carrier Track

An interesting album off Dubmission Records, starts off all big and static laden dub, a little similar to some of the Rhythm & Sound, or Brendan Moeller stuff, but a little more rootsy in vibe. Then this album goes into a bit of a trip-hoppy headspace, where it comes off a little 'BoC'ish, and provides some nice crunchy pieces with heaps of gritty drums and sci-fi bleeps and bloops swooshing about, then goes back all dubby for the end. Apparantly its by the Scandanavian producer Atmos, who I gather has done quite well in the psytrance scene (all of which I don't know too much of), so it's probably time I check more of him out. Oh yeah dirty cheap, bandcamp wins again!

Cloudcycle - 1 Year Birthday + heaps of new cloud packs

So Mauxuam has been a very busy man lately, what with releasing a barrage of EP's and albums on Bakshish Music, from the great Cloudcycle collaborators Lingua Lustra, and Master Margherita. But he's found time to celebrate the Cloudcycle birthday with another massive release of quality ambient. So have a listen to this lot (including my cloud, Chimbre), it's all free too. http://cloudcycle.net/log/downloads/ and here's a birthday mashup video from Lingua Lustra. http://cloudcycle.net/log/cloudcycle-birthday-present-from-lingua-lustra/

Woob - Repurpose

I could write a load on this brand new Woob album, but words would not do it justice in the slightest. Needs to be heard, thats all there is to it. Cinema for the ears.

Merohedra - Live @ Psycrowdelica 2010

So finally a live set available from one of my favourite producers, Greg Hunter, who has been sculpting his Merohedra sound into a live performance. I love the way he has kept the same vibe throughout the whole set, but each track is very unique and theres subtleties all over. Lots of glitchy post techno beats and basses intertwined with precisely mangled Persian, and Sufi instrumentation. Although I haven't explored much of this sound (where to start?), it would appear Greg has created something very personal to him, and definitely has his own sound to it. Check it out here http://merohedra.net/web/?p=1

Enuui - Mareación

A new track from myself. Features field recordings of Chimbre and the Peruvian rainforest, provided kindly by Rob Velez, the man behind Chimbre. So amongst the bird chirps and the crickets, I've intertwined Maestro Mancoluto icaro (a song for spirit communication in ayahuasca sessions), and his rainstick providing an earthly primitive rhythm. Free download at my Bandcamp

Enjoy! I have a few more great albums to share in a few days.

Ambient in the year twothousandonezero

syd_mead_shipwreck.jpg

This start to the year has provided some excellent ambient works. I thought I'd give you a little rundown on what's popped up on my radar.

Atomic Skunk - Portal

This I ordered last week, got the download, and just waiting for the digipak CD to arrive. On initial listen whilst mooching about in the fields, I have to say this is incredibly sculpted, quite a rare and exciting composition. I recognise some of the sounds he uses for we have a similar production setup, but the way he's intertwined all the elements and manipulated them as a whole gives me great respect to him as he has handled a powerful production tool extremely well. Definitely the contender for best ambient album of the year.

Tom Middleton - Aznyte Falls

I wish soundcloud would work with this blog because there so much great music on there. So you're gonna have to click for this free ambient track from Tom Middleton. It's 10 years old, but only just surfaced. An unreleased gem. Click here to hear and download

Cloudcycle - Intricacy

A new track from the clouds which just hitting play will describe itself better than I could. What I do love about it is that it's a perfect introduction for Lingua Lustra's album on Cloudcycle's online platform Bak$hish Music, so moving on here's....

Lingua Lustra - Ijatevuvun

Love the artwork for this... love the music even more. A mutation of delicate, intricate, and sometimes often bleak, industrial, and metallic ambient soundscapes, but definitely rich in lovely harmonics. Great pace to all of the tracks. Also in my 2010 ambient album of the year contender list. Cheers Mauxuam & Lingua Lustra.

Spectralite - Temple Of Stars

An album which I haven't actually had a full listen to. I only came across this the other night thanks to Andrew @ Interchill. Looking more closely, its Greg Hunter & Darren Sangita. No mention from Greg on this which came out in February, but better late than never in discovering this. So this morning while I'm writing this, I'm downloading this album from the Spectralite bandcamp page. Having listened to just the first track and bought it based on that I'm very excited to hear what's in store. Although I didn't, you can have a listen to all the whole album on the bandcamp page.

Unimaginative Title #2984

What's been happening lately? I've finally got the final track of my album done, which is great, after not been producing much in the last month, apart from some really sketchy ideas. It's a pure ambient journey that represents what I imagine to be the morning after a Chimbre experience. Chimbre being a spiritual retreat in the Peruvian rainforest. It only has just been established but still has provided some excellent scenery to some heavy psychotheraputic work for many individuals. Check it out at chimbre.com!

So you can have a quick listen (well quick being 15 minutes) to the track on my Soundcloud - http://soundcloud.com/el-cubist/enuui-chimbre-feat-mauxuam-greg-hunter

This track is a collaborative track with Mauxuam and Greg Hunter, who if you've been reading some of my earlier posts are Cloudcycle. I have a bunch of samples I got off them and have tried making a few tracks, but they just haven't cut it. This one though is more fitting towards a halfway point between my sound and their sound.

Also I am in the process of creating a Sufi-esque Persian piece of ambient drum and bass for the experimental noise/jazz/drumfunk d'n'b label Pinecone Moonshine. Nic TVG, the label boss, has been a good friend for many years back when I was running Exegene, and I'm glad to be now working on something for his wicked label, which has some great artists on like Macc, dgoHn, Fanu, Jiva, Ibunshi, Parallel, Eschaton, and of course Nic TVG himself.

Also looking forward to seeing Hallucinogen live, Shpongle DJ set, and Eat Static live in London in a couple of weeks, as well as seeing the African Soul Rebels tour in Manchester with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, Oumou Sangaré, and the Kalahari Surfers.
